The greatest lesson I’ve learned dealing with this producer is the lesson of ‘always expect the unexpected’ because no two records are the same. With that in mind let’s get into his latest offering!
This is the brand new album by Producer/MC -Jamis Cunningham and MC’s By -Bradley Rogalski and Bead! Together they drop this 12 track, 27 minute experience that as I expected was going to be different then the other stuff Jamis has helped worked on prior!
If we start with the production aspect in Jamis. This Mormon superstar has a wide range of sounds and influences to pick apart on this one! Let’s start with my favourite beat on this whole tape -OH!
This one feels like a Greek mythology story heard in sonic form. From that echoing/eerie vocal snippet in that angelic fashion that’s combined with those thudding drums and sickeningly heavy strings that drop down on the track like bricks of titanium! Truly monstrous like thunderbolts of Zeus!
We have tracks like -Take Me To Trial which is one of the most subtly gifted tracks I’ve heard in a minute. The type of instrumental you play while smoking a fat one and laid back letting your imagination do all the work! On this one we hear those gorgeous what sounds like synth style flute samples that is combined with those light drum beats and some funky bass that adds a bit of texture to the track!
There’s even the track -Mystic Ruins we have what sounds like 1960’s 007 adventure sequence that I loved. That intro made me think of Bond running through his latest challenge! But then it evolves into this tropical paradise song with those free lance flute samples in the background combined with some rhythmic chord progression and more mesmerising drums that makes this feel like Hawaii in audio form!
As far as the MC work goes, this is the first time I’ve heard this man but I’d say he suits the production well! He has a sense of raw vocals about it that sounds less manufactured and more organic and on the spot!
I found his performances across these 12 tracks an interesting insight as he brings all his thoughts, mindset and passion to the forefront in quite the distinctive way!
The first thing I noticed about him is the fact he blends a combination of smooth delivery combined with assertive cadence that puts him firmly at the forefront of the tracks but with a casual touch with bars which makes him walk an excellent verbal tightrope that most couldn’t hack!
I do like how on some tracks he’s not above letting the beat ride and letting the audience appreciate the various instrumentals in more heavy concentration which I found dope! I also love his witty lyricism at times like on the song -Pullout where he goes ‘I once had a bad dream, there was no more caffeine’ as someone who is indeed a caffeine addict that line terrified me!
I also love how there’s rap features by both Jamie himself and Bead! In the tracks they are on they help provide some compelling chemistry and helped amplify the tracks with a new fresh set of vocals and energy which I found terrific!
Have you heard this one yet? I’d say Jamis pulled off another versatile record that is different from the others and the performances were stellar! Go listen now!
