This producer I discovered around two years ago now. What struck me was his alias last name. As Scorsese is my favourite director I was instantly drawn and after discovering his music I haven’t looked back.
This time around he’s accompanied by one of the strongest curators in the game right now and together they put everything on the map! Let’s talk about it!
This is the brand new curated album by -17th Cipher and Producer -Work Scorsese and together they drop this fascinating 12 track record with the likes of
-Liym Capital
-Mar
-Vic Spencer
-Dnte
-Black Messiah
-Yasin
-EricTheRed13
-Action Figure 973
-Doza The Drum Dealer
-Beedie
-Deziner Drugz
-Devine Carama
-Skanks The Rap Martyr
-Ill Gordon
-Rufus Sims
-kizle
-Young Reese Dude
-Villa Velli
-Rique Wit Da Wickz
And man, these rappers SPIT! I already covered today an album of this blueprint and I said on that one that I prefer a one rapper/one producer style with some features rather than a compilation effort but you can’t deny that 17th Cipher has a magic ability to turn large roster records into a must listen experience and today is the same situation as the others!
The way we she’s able to bring together so many different artists, charismas, cadences and characteristics and make them all work under the same banner is quite Impressive! Each song has many different names all working to not only beat the one next to them in some brotherly competition but to also keep the tracks fluent, working well and come equipped with no award transitions or blank spots where one talent out shines the other! It’s all done exceptionally!
If I had to play devils advocate and list my favourite performances across this tape I’d have to mention these.
Firstly -Sun Tzu that opening verse by Dnte? HOLY SHIT! To be honest I first thought it was Action Figure 973 rapping a bit faster then normal but that was my bad! Still that was one of the most solid opening verses I’ve heard all year! Had my face all scrunched up and shit!
In fact the momentum only got stronger with the second verse by Mar! maintaining that sharp and relentless force that the first brought!
-Flamethrower was another iconic one when we hear THE REAL Action Figure 973 and EricRed comes in with a methodically designed track that forces you to feel every word!
That opening malicious verse that slowly turns your head involuntarily while you hear some fierce thunder in hip hop form that later evolves into Action who came back on his bragging shit that he’s earned over this year!
BUT THEN we hear the iconic DOZA close up with his notorious cadence shacking up the finale of the track!
The track -Whole Brick had a strong vibe as well! With both Beedie and Deziner showcasing their strong performances by providing two different type of energies on the song that I couldn’t get enough of! Sharp, precise, flavourful and dominant! I don’t remember these two being on the track before and they didn’t disappoint!
When we discuss the production aspect of this shit. The first thing I noticed was how stripped back and minimal the instrumentals were. I mean he is well known for that gritty, muddy style but on this one (for the most part) it feels like a 27 minute continuation of the same song chopped up into 11 different aspects and tweaked a little here, a little there but overall the same signature atmosphere across the board!
I’m talking about that methodically looped rhythms, plucked strings, abrasive chord progressions with a subtle vocal loop! With the occasional sharp synth string and stripped drum work.
There is some exceptions such as -Whole Brick that has this groovy/soul vibe ambiance with those echoing piano chords and lush drums!
It’s not easy to have one producer fit and tailor each artist and their unique styles to the perfect instrumentals but that’s exactly what Work has done, he’s found the score that world best suit the individuals on the songs and made them pop! Understanding their various signature and working accordingly, definitely a solid effort on his part!
Overall, another banger from 17th Cipher. From the Household name features to the powerhouse beat maker it all comes together beautifully! Definitely not one to sleep on! And shoutout to cdinkdyer for the incredible art once again!
