If there ever was a man who was the king of reinvention it would be him. Since I first covered him till now I feel I’ve gone through 10x different re brands and alias but the one thing that never changed was the quality of music! With this new record it seems his legacy run continues! Let’s talk about it! This is the brand new album by MC -Bugsy Mogues and this is a half standard half beat tape structure which already was an intriguing concept to face but creativity is his middle name and he brings with him the titan -DatKidbravo for a 17 minutes I’m sure you won’t forget! Let’s start with the production as that is the is the calling card on this one. The fans I’m sure are curious to see how a half/half album goes and I gotta say it’s pretty fascinating! Because you get regular intervals of break from the voices which can feel a bit refreshing. It’s like the album is giving you a cool down period to help you appreciate the verses more when they come around! There’s beats like -MAD MAX which has this groovy blend of Reggaeton and Funk. From those sticky plucked strings, what sounds like maracas in the background with some light claps and a festive vocal sample that comes through towards the end of the track! There’s beats like -DAMN! Which has this 1950’s theatrical performance feel. From thar sharp violin sample, thick as fuck drums, ridiculous bass lines that all combines to make this gritty boom Bap influence track for Bugsy to go off on! There’s even tracks like -FOOLING MYSELF which has one of the most gorgeous usage of the vocal sample on the whole project. That repeated angelic line spoken over and over was pin point in its effectiveness! This is combined with some Jazz style subtle keys, some groovy strings and a rhythmic drum pattern that wraps this whole song together nicely! Might be my favourite instrumental on the whole project! When establishing the rapping parts of it, I feel it’s alot more grand and lush in delivery (due to that gap in between each song) that gives his words time to breathe and process track to track. By doing so it makes his short verses feel heavier, more compelling and overall more powerful to listen to. Quite a smart choice by him! Honestly the last time I heard an album like this was the -Black Flag album ‘Family Man’ in where the first half was accapella spoken word tracks and the other half pure instrumentals but besides that Bugsy is in a league of his own doing this style! In the less then 20 minutes he had to work with he struck gold. With sharp brash lyricism with exciting puns and killer instinct when to drop bars on the beats. Not to mention the fact he produced it all! So he’s the ultimate threat and you can tell he feels comfortable at home in his element. I hope he continues to pull off albums like this, ones that stand out. Showcase HIM more than anything. Of course a few features is dope and DatKid definitely brought it as he always has but this album (if it’s a sign of things to come) was a fantastic step forward in his career!
