First of all, what a dope fucking name. Perfect wordplay for the characters involved! On this occasion we have a combination of some of the heaviest hitters in the underground who decide to team up to create an experience unlike any other! With that in mind, let’s talk about it!
This is the brand new EP drop with Producer -Chrome Rockwell and MC’s Jezus Borgia and Polo Baby Flako and this trio drops this 6 track, 13 minute explosive of sounds, flavours and influences that is sure to leave a brain freeze you won’t forget!
If we discuss the production aspect first we get to look into a score that I’d initially describe as ‘Ambient Boom Bap’ a fusion of soulful, lo fi and raw instrumentation that comes together to create a vibe that’s equal parts
-Powerful yet melodic! To be able to balance such diverse elements into each beat isn’t easy to do and yet Chrome pulls off the Tom Cruise and does the Mission impossible!
A few key beats stuck out to me such as -Flagler Sour as we see in this one a utilisation of these lavish key loops, plucked strings and this gorgeously minimal use of vocal snippets that’s combined with some light Jazz style drums that help provide a sense of ‘structure’ and ‘rhythm’ to the overall track
There’s the track -Purple Label which starts off with this interlude that feels like the resurgence of the Jackson 5! It’s vibrant, classic and soulful that touches your soul immensely! As the track evolves we get such elements as those heavy thudding drums, those infectious Jazz horns in the background and of course that remaining vocal sample that provides some delicate balance to the track!
Not to mention those strings that are ever so groovy and harmonic!
Even the final track -Billy Corgan (Grow) which I’d say has the most lo fi inspired vibe of the whole bunch! From those immersive chord progressions/keys and plucked strings that all seem to complement each other in this outer worldly arrangement that can’t be described but have to hear to believe!
There’s also that drum beat that ever so softly goes throughout the track and acting as a sort of skeleton to the track!
As far as the MC work goes, this is a new for me because I’ve heard both these men separately but never on the same project. It’s rather interesting because both have distinctively different styles, vocal patterns, techniques, cadences the whole 9 yards and yet they made it work under the supreme production of Chrome they make the the appropriate synchronous rhythm that suits this EP to the tee!
I still can’t believe it’s only 13 minutes long! This one feels larger in scale than that. You can feel the connection, the complexity and depth both men are putting in to make each song unique and each verse feel special. It’s like a sonic sweet and sour meal.
From the high energy, charismatic Polo hyping up the track to the more raw, deeper toned Jezus who always makes his bars feel like bars of bricks! Getting the best of both worlds is a feeling you truly have to feel for yourself!
Both men have incredible flow, lyricism and pacing. It doesn’t feel like one is outdoing the other but more both putting in the work to make each track feel balanced, enjoyable and dope in the pen game! Two great MC’s killing each instrumental what more could you ask for?
If you haven’t heard this one yet you’re missing on! One of the stronger EP’s to come out this year for sure!
