One thing I’m a sucker for is a theatrical album. It’s always a keen interest because it shows the artist/s are trying to make something that’s beyond themselves and create a literal sonic adventure that you could close your eyes and hear play out as a film. With this in mind, let’s get into this brand new album that is sure to make you reminiscent of a cinema (just without the bankruptcy cost for the food and drinks) This is the brand new drop by MC -Pab Montego and it’s produced by the likes of -Deevyus -Bigg Classic Beats -Sinamatik -Gold_Magnum_Opus -TheBeatDealers -Handz -Echo Press Music Group -AloMega -Pryme Prolifik And features Mc’s such as -Mr. Ripley -Buck Gottie -Hiway730 -Crotona P -Pryme Prolifik And as I spoke about the ‘cinematic’ effect it starts all the way from the intro with that fly spoken word part which is essentially a grand shoutout by Mr. Ripley introducing Pab to the audience and to the album but it’s done in such a dramatic way that you can’t help but feel sucked in! Kind of like we Raekwon on the track -Jul 27th introduced WSG and the Griselda family that kind of intensity and anticipation the intro builds for the rest of the album can be seen done here! Now as the album continues and we unpack this 15 track project we hear a bunch of different stylistic choices and influences that help shapes this album as a whole! For example we have cuts like -Piano’s Pain which has this tragic and somber feeling to the whole track (as the track title suggests) this one uses the piano to breathe sadness into the instrumental. This song over a minute of nothing but heavy piano keys and what sounds like rain sounds. It’s only about a minute and a half in that we hear some drums come in to give this song a bit of a texture but overall this song remains heavy hearted and haunting in its entirety! There’s tracks like -Cocaine Residue which starts off with that film snippet of an argument that later evolves into this distorted synth style chord progressions, some sharp jazz horns, thick bass and some surgical drums that feel weighted and thick! This kind of track has each of the instruments feel doom inspired and serious. This one feels like you can feel the tragedy of the streets and it runs throughout your whole body! Truly tragic. Even on tracks like -Black Sinatra as the song starts off with that sci fi sound effect that makes you feel like aliens have arrived! After the intro we get this boom Bap flavoured instrumental that consists of those UFO sounds, long and winded chord progressions, hypnotic drum beats and some thick bass that adds some raw texture to the song! I also love how mysterious and spacey those keys feel that are scattered throughout the track! Definitely an unusual but interesting addition to the track! As far as the MC work goes, I’ve already had past experiences with Pab to know just how solid he is and on this occasion he utilises the power of the production to it’s utmost capacity and creates a rhythmic soundscape that is every bit as excited, intense and powerful as the instrumentals and snippets added throughout the album. He wants to make sure he’s the main character in this sound only movie and boy does he deliver on that note! What I found truly impressive was that throughout the whole 39 minutes we didn’t see Pab get winded or lacklustre at all. This was straight conceptual bars laced with emotion, heart felt verses and passionate performances that make you feel like you’re really travelling into the man’s head and going through all his thoughts and feelings. From track to track you get access to a different side of him, from his more intimate and personal experiences, to his brash and bragging attitude filled bars do his more introspective and thought provoking bars he literally shares it all while maintaining a strong conceptual theme to the overall record! Walking a very impressive fine line! Also, gotta love his professional studio relationship with the features on here! They work out as usual, some familiar names others new to me but they all work out the same. He’s always able to create a strong bond with the names he brings out and that’s even more true on this one! So, have you heard the tape yet? What do you think? What do you say? Let me know!
