You know, it seems every day I get the opportunity to discover a new talent. Whether that be through my own discovery or recommendations by others. My mind is always expanding and my horizons are boundless, and that’s where this new artist comes from. A sound that’s unlike any other I’ve heard yet and one that I’m sure could gain a cult following for! Let’s talk about it! This is the brand-new EP by artist -Souley with Mix, Mastering, and Engineering by my main man -Tae Zandr, and alongside a variety of hosts of producers such as -Kewan -Prod Kalo Beats -Amour Amour -JAMMY BEATZ we have these four tracks that help give a glimpse into the mindset and personality of Souley! Let’s discuss the production first because I can’t help but feel teleported back into my teen years. The reminiscences of the ‘Lo Fi/Experimental Sound Cloud Era/Early Alt RnB’ phases come full force on this EP! Like on tracks like -Sacred Love, where we hear that acoustic influence of those hypnotic strings in that smooth pattern that is later joined by some atmospheric drum patterns and thick bass. But the way it’s handled and executed definitely has a mid to late 2000s or even early 2010s vibe to it. Back when it was about ‘feel’ and ‘ambiance’ rather than making radio songs! We can talk about the track -Substance, which has this sombre energy to it with those methodically paced chord progressions that slowly draw you into the rhythm of the track until about 10 seconds in. It drags you into the full force of the track with its slick drum pattern, heavy bass, and delicate piano keys that go off in such a subtle pattern that it satisfies the brain waves! Even the song -Sexting, which by nature of the title has a dirty context to it, and the way this song starts with those damn near muffled chords that sound like you’re listening to the interlude of the song underwater! And as the song proceeds, you get this trademark hip-hop feel with the fantastic trio of the bass, drum patterns, and hollow chords that creep around the track in the background! When we discuss the actual vocal performances, I’d describe her as a combination (now bear with me, this is going to be a wild comparison) but a mix between Sade and Cr1tter. Now, let me explain myself. You’ve got the side of Sade that showcases those beautifully woven ambient vocals that feel almost angelic in their style. That emotionally satisfying touch to her performance that’s woven with a sense of heart and warmth that only certain artists could hope to aspire to! And Cr1tter, I sense the same edge-based non-conforming rhythms and approach that makes her feel a tad bit chaotic. That same powerful free spirit energy that lets her present to us four different versions of herself on this EP! As if she has four different sonic personalities that she wants to get out and just like Cr1tter, she unapologetically lets every part come out! You combine these two and you get this! An artist who isn’t afraid to express herself, showcase an array of different characteristics, and be damn captivating while doing it! She’s the type of artist that knows how to play to the synchronicity of the production to a tee, and that’s something I always respect and love! So, are you going to be one of the people to give this a try? I highly recommend it. At the end of the day, it may not be your cup of tea, but at least you can say you expanded your horizons and supported a new artist!
