What a year this man has had. From a secret upcoming curated with yours truly, to an ECW inspired album and everything inbetween. He’s really going for broke and it’s fantastic to hear. From discovering said talent almost two years ago now till now he’s been a man whose passion and performances always stand out from the rest! So let’s see what we have this time around. This is the brand new album by MC Sabio Dub and Producer SIRDAVID and together they drop this 8 track, 17 minute feature project with the like of -Malhee -Gustavo Louis -OhMyth -Cass McBride as the click to accompany Sabio on this journey! When we discuss the production aspect, we go back to his roots. Back to that trademark ‘sunshine rap’ that brought him to the dance to begin with! It’s no secret of me preferring when he dabbles in this production as I feel it highlights his voice and vibe a lot better that way! There are a few expectations to that rule on this record such as -…Too Many Times! One of the few gritty boom Bap street variant instrumentals on this album. What I love about it is that it reminds me of the last time they collaborated and Gustavo gave (what I called back then) his best verse to date and this new one is a strong contender also! But on this beat we have this cold blooded piano rhythm that’s combined with some methodically paced drums and subtle bass strings! A truly skeletal yet powerful track that breaks the tradition of the sunshine feel! -The second track in -Beautiful starts off with this Bizarre almost glitchy instrumentation fusion but later fizzled out into this gorgeous soulful track that consists of this repetitive male vocal loop, thick strings with that hypnotic drum work! Once again in true sunshine fashion it’s a minimal layered experience that puts energy back into the body! There’s also the track -Texas Toast which closes the album off! On this one we have this stripped back almost choir vocal extension that’s combined with a tweaking high pitch string work that’s paired with that funky drums and bass strings! This one feels like a late 70’s or early 80’s funk mixed with soul and ends with the MC Cass who brings his unique style to the forefront! As far as the MC work goes, I’ll put it to you like this. It you’ve never heard a Sabio album before now then your in for a treat because this is his best form of himself, his wavy, smooth delivery combined with his nonchalant tone and energy behind him! If you are familiar with his work already then you’ll know what to expect. I wouldn’t exactly call this album ‘ground breaking’ for Sabio especially since he just dropped a ECW themed album and soon to drop a CIA based album! (Coming soon) but there’s nothing wrong with sticking to what you’re good and comfortable at and utilising it! He once again shows strong promise and chemistry with the names he brought. Another banger with Gustavo murdering the beat to familiar duo’s of Malhee and even newer names (to me at least) in OhMyth and Cass McBride all who help elevate this record and bring new life to the tracks they feature on! So, again. If you’re new here! You’re gonna have a blast! I don’t think any other MC can imitate Sabio when he’s on this wave and if you’re a day one fan, enjoy more of the same that you know and love!
