You Know The Rest, Vol. 3

What an interesting premise I’m faced with. Starting a series with its third installation! While discovering a new MC in the process! A lot of ‘new’ in this review and yet something tells me I’m gonna have a blast! Let’s talk about it! This is the brand new album drop by MC -CJ The Prince and Producer/MC -OhJay with features from -Jacksun -.Tetsuo -Tha God Fahim -067Red And if that ain’t a solid line up I don’t know what is! Now I want to discuss rapping side first because this was a treat I wasn’t expecting! Firstly the chemistry between the two was amazing. You had CJ with his fast paced, chaotic flow that feels like a machine gun with no aim assist just words and lyrics flying and hitting any which way in a beautiful sweep of tornado waves of energy and charisma that made each bar feel colorful and powerful! Then the producer OhJay was the raw calm to the madness with more trademark, methodical style performances that made each of his bars feel like actual bars of concrete stacking across the instrumentals! A truly remarkable combo! The way they communicated with the various features was a nice touch because each feature brings their own visual, perspectives and atmosphere to the tracks and to the already established duo of CJ and OhJay! First of all hearing both 067 Red and Fahim on the same track was beyond DOPE but if you had to have my opinion on the best feature I’d have to say .Tetuso! He’s always a refreshing surprise to me as he’s always bringing something new and unpredictable and this is exactly that! What a great talent he is! When we discuss the production we are gifted with some of the most surreal scores of music I’ve heard all year. Each instrumental feels like its own world and experience to itself! Considering this is only 7 tracks it feels 7 seperate universes coming together as one! Whether you’re discussing the track ‘LEAST OF THESE’ that has that ridiculously smooth Jazz loop with that beautiful Jazz horns, combined with that rock and roll drums and thick bass! One of the more minimal tracks but the layers we do have work splendidly! There’s the track ‘WE ARE SO BACK’ which bring the GROOVE to the album! In a beat that feels like late 1970’s funk we’ve got a combination of those lively piano keys in that free lance loop that also has those sharp jazz horns, scattered chords in the background and some minimal drums that keeps the rest of the instrumentation working like a well oiled machine! What about the track ‘MISERY LOVES COMPANY’ on this one I was the most surprised with the nature of the track! Why? Mainly because every 10-15 seconds there’s thing yelling vocal snippet that gives this a rather experimental/noise factor to the track! As well as that there’s these sci fi style synth chords that run throughout the entire track and what sounds like a handful of tribal bass drums that actively course throughout the entire instrumental! All I can say is, this was a fun, enlightening and creative album. Each track felt different and each performance more so! These artists will definitely be on my radar to come!
