I’m a bit late to this one but a project I wouldn’t miss for the world. Why? Because it features one of the premium producers of the culture and an MC that I’ve seen alot in the game getting critical attention and so with that in mind, let’s talk about it! This is the latest 12 track album by Producer -Deevo Da Genius and MC TEGA with 28 minutes of run time and the likes of -Dun Dealy -Shaykh Hanif -Borirock -BlueHillBill -Kil The Artist -4FIVE6 NICE -FNM Mook And with the strength in the roster this one is bound to be incredible and to no one’s surprise it was! Across this tape we hear Deevo incorporate a variety of sounds to best suit the tone of the artists on the instrumentals. It’s not a one size fits all mentality but more a blend of various influences like a sonic platter of beats that will please every kind of hip hop fan. For example we have tracks like -BRICK OF CUT which has this heavy boom Bap gritty feel to match the energy of the FEED THE FAMILY soldiers in Bori and Dealy! You’ve got those eerie piano keys, drone style drums and heavy bass! This one is skeletal as all hell but it works for the men involved! There’s tracks like -ANDIWANTHERTOO as we hear a more soulful version of a beat that is equal parts beautiful and powerful to match the likes of BlueHill and Kil Tha Artist! On this one we have that prominent vocal loop that wraps around the track. We’ve also got some 90’s style cuts and scratches as well as some funky plucked strings and some of the most hypnotic drums I’ve heard all year! This beat is absolutely gorgeous! There’s even tracks like -I MUST BE DREAMING which again has a solid soulful/classic vibe that feels like a 90’s vibe. On this one it’s just Tega solo and in turn this one has some more beautiful vocal harmonies combined with some sharp strings and thick bass and drums that work together to create a strong balance between ambient and smooth! When we discuss the lyrics and the performance by TEGA and the rest we discuss a project (that at least to me) feels like it’s taking the blueprint back to the 90’s/2000’s era of solid production meets frequent features! Remember all those ‘classics’ that you grew up with and remember how many names would always accompany? Dr Dre -2001, 2Pac -All Eyez On Me, Snoop Dogg -Tha Blue Carpet Treatment all the best albums back in the day had a roster of names accompanying it and I feel this album is a return to that! TEGA himself is a great MC. He has strict flow, trademark lyricism consisting of brash bars combined with witty social commentary and also I love the various skit things that are heard between the tracks! Talking to people in jail or various snippets that keep this album sounding interesting! TEGA also has a good charismatic feel to him making his verses (amongst the sea of talent) still feel important and the main character of his album! But of course I can’t not mention the features because they obviously play a huge role in the execution of the record. Not only are they the premier names going but they make sure their chemistry with TEGA is tight and helps elevate the tracks! Nothing worse then features that’s don’t compliment the main artist! Playing Devil’s Advocate I’d say -Shaykh had the best feature verse of the night! So have you heard it yet? If so let me know what you think!
