I think I can confidently say this is the first time I’ve ever started a review with ‘I’m starting with season 18’ what a unique experience. With that in mind I get to listen to a duo between a producer I’ve become strongly associated with to an MC I’ve had the opposite experience with! Regardless a listening adventure unlike any I’ve had yet! So with that in mind let’s talk about it! This is the brand new EP by MC -Echo and Producer -Dominican Kev! 5 tracks, 14 minutes of some of the most stylish and experimental work we’ve had this month! Let’s start with the lavish production by Kev! Firstly this record starts with -Guava Chakra a track that has a tinge of soul mixed with some minimal layering! You’ve got that gorgeous vocal harmony sped across the track! Accompanied by some light strings and various adlibs! A sweet introduction to the record! Second track -No Hook has a more muffled and echoed effect! You’ve got what sounds like distorted vocals in the background alongside some subtle bass strings that all occurs behind this hard to decipher sound wall! A very unique instrumental! Track three we have -Can’t Share My Love we switch up to a more soft Jazz feel with those gorgeous use of piano keys combined with that atmosphere chords and another solid vocal harmony that feels slightly muddled in execution! Track four -M-Theory we have this introspective sounding track which features those sterile chords combined with that plucked strings and some consistent atmosphere packed behind it! There’s also a very light and almost hard to notice vocals deep in the background! And the finale track -Ground Beef we end things with a curious bang. This one has some tweaking/chipmunk style vocal snippets that loop around the track in another muffled aspect that’s combined with some funky bass strings and what sounds like some light piano keys in the background! Accompanying the production we have Echo who brings a strong sense of charisma and personality to the EP! He brings a new side to him with each track passed which helps elevate the various instrumentals! With no feature to speak of (and representing a lot of the tracks) this man ECHO’s his slick verses, versatile penmanship and a enigmatic tone that helps him stand out as a colorful and vibrant presence! I love how within the entirety of the 14 minutes he doesn’t let up once! Rather showcasing new and more dynamic versions of himself than the last! Some tracks fast, some slow, others more whimsical in nature. He doesn’t follow a pattern HE CREATES THEM and if this is the 18th season? I can’t imagine what he’s tried in the other 17 to get it to here! It’s almost like he’s representing cats like ODB And Andre 3k in a sense! The same unique and individual traits combined with the solid hip hop gene! Mix that all together and you’ve got a listen party that you don’t want to end that brings solid chemistry with Kev! This is definitely a EP that you shouldn’t try at least once! It ain’t like your average album and that’s what makes it solid!
