It’s safe to say it’s been a solid minute I last covered this man. After discovering him last year his career has only gotten that much more interesting! Covering an array of different types of music he’s one who you can always count on to surprise you when you least expect it and this is one of those times! Let’s talk about it! So, this is the latest album by Producer -YFI and features a wide range of names from -Saahilio -warwillkill -Charley Roy -Dominican Kev -Agent Sin -FlyG -Gustavo Louis -JazyLionMan -THE REBEL SKY -Knowitall -GOMMi J And with this arrangement of names behind him it’s no wonder this thing is the banger that it became. Not just in the traditional sense of ‘hit songs for the radio’ but in a more refined and sophisticated sense. Looking no further then that intro track! Oh my god what a masterpiece of a starter track! Those angelic vocals in that timely loop combined with those lush piano keys and that overall skeletal exterior is just gorgeous. Not to mention that vocal harmony by Saah just took this track to a whole new level! As this album continues we get a range of different sounds and influences that helps make this an original piece of art. Even the second track in we have a different vibe then the first but yet equally as beautiful in it’s orchestration! From those plucked chord progressions, chipmunk style vocals, sharp strings and some thickened bass to wrap everything up! Not to mention War’s in your face performance to add flare to the fire! What’s interesting is that scattered throughout this album there is a set of pure instrumental records that showcase YFI’s extraordinary ability behind the beats and I feel more albums should do what he does! Having a mix of tracks with vocals and others without. Such as tracks like -øPRAH where we hear a combination of that soulful vocals in that sample loop mixed with some delicate keys, light synth and methodically paced drums that help lend itself to the overall structure of the beat! I love how every now and then on this album you’ll get cuts like -WARMASK_ where YFI goes back to his gritty, hip hop wave with those lush jazz horns, eerier key progressions, surreal dreams that reminds me of a Daringer type influence! Not to mention that vicious and brutal verse by Charley! It’s almost like YFI went ‘nah let me switch it up on them for second’ and dropped that banger! There’s even special cuts like the song -TøRPEDØBASE_ where he essentially does a fusion track with Dominican Kev? Firstly has anyone been on the rise up run in the producer world like Kev? He’s out here already working with the who’s who, making Stella albums and now he’s just taking over beats? If that ain’t some gangsta shit I don’t know what is! His side of things has this extensive chipmunk style vocal loop over some plucked strings and some sharp jazz horns while YFI’s began his with some classical vocals, lavish synth style chords and surreal drums! Man what a track to hear both! Look, I knew this one was going to be good but I didn’t expect this! The quality of all the elements involved from the instrumentation to the performances it’s all top notch and I think it’s a record that everyone should try out!
